Not exactly your classic EP assassination but this points out both the threat and vulnerability that exists even for security professionals.
The victim was identified as Michel Niaucel, age 53 and reportedly in charge of security for European Union missions in West Africa.
His body was found at his home in the country’s main city, Abidjan. The circumstances of his death are unclear. According to press reports, Niaucel’s residence was “heavily guarded.”
While I am not familiar with the exact level of residential security for EU members in Africa, it is likely he had some sort of local guard similiar to what exists for US foreign service personnel serving abroad.
It would be interesting to see whether there were any reports of surveillance on Niaucel prior to this incident.
